I work in an accounting firm, a Big 4 if you like. In such a firm, everyone in and out of the business knows that faces change faster than a Chinese Bianlian show.
Having said that, I will give you a first-hand account of what it’s like.
Corny but true and I make no apologies, it’s rather like the America’s Next Top Model lineup on TV - where each week one character fades from the picture until at the end, there is that last one standing. Only in this case, you don’t really know what you’ve won.
The next starry-eyed batch comes along (just like TV the show must go on, you see) and camaraderie has to be rebuilt, jokes retold, and friendships reforged. It gets old, and shockingly after not-quite 4 years of this jazz, I am tired.
Yes, work is just work, but somehow the workplace is not all about work is it? Unless you are from the cold-hearted, single-minded, climb-ladder-at-all-costs kind of school, the people who run the mill with you everyday do matter.
In short; allizdavidsengfunpohsuandilloncharleswaichoongcheliangjusttomentionafew, you are greatly missed. Group trips are not the same without you.

Hmmm...I'm contemplating how to frame this... You seem quite progressive for who I imagine to be working in what sounds like a multi-national accounting firm. In all honesty, coming from a world of the arts and nonprofits, big businesses scare the heck out of me. I don't understand them. I imagine de-personalization (which, in fact, this post may be affirming when one batch becomes replaceable cogs for another). Is work just work, or is it something more? I don't think I could work without knowing that I (hopefully) contribute to the world in a positive and ideally impactful way. (I currently work in a nonprofit fair trade import and development organization, so work with artisans and farmers in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.)
haha hi lucia, glad u noticed the 'discord'. goes to show not all accounting firm ppl are the same huh? our work is a cog in the world of so-called big bad businesses, but it's not all bad. it's about improving work processes and strenghtening controls. which all organisations, even non-profit ones need (we did service an internaional ngo before). i'd love to do what you do though, but m'sia has limited opportunities..so will just have to make a difference through a tired world which don't seem to want to make real differences anymore.
yup, haha on me and my all-too-narrow world view
